Zero-waste Shampoo, Conditioner, and Body Wash. Featuring – Plaine Products

Since deciding to try and live more sustainably, I’ve started looking at some of my everyday habits differently.  Around eight million tonnes of plastic waste is dumped into our oceans every year; we produce mountains of plastic refuse.  I recently came across Plaine Products, a subscription-based company that has created natural, vegan toiletries packaged in reusable, returnable aluminium bottles. When you’ve used the bottle up, mail it back and they send you a new one.

Introducing Plaine Products

Plaine was set up by two sisters, Lindsey and Ali.  They’re raising awareness of the environmental issues caused by single-use plastic products and encouraging people to make small changes with more sustainable options.

So far, Plaine offers a shampoo, conditioner, and body wash, all in a rosemary, mint, and vanilla scent.  I wasn’t sure I’d like this combination as I ordinarily default to sweet candy-like smells. The Plaine scent is refreshing and my hair feels soft. Furthermore, the natural ingredient list is reassuringly easy to recognise and pronounce (I like to read labels aloud in the shower).

Lindsey and Ali chose aluminium bottles for their durability and because when the material is recycled, it doesn’t diminish in quality.  The bottles are strong enough to endure multiple trips to and from the customer and will be well loved before recycled.

How does it work

You can either place one-off orders or sign up for the subscription service.  When your delivery arrives, you can send back your empty bottle(s) in the same package (a return label is also provided).  Plaine cleans and sterilises its returned bottles and these are then refilled and reused.

My Thoughts on Plaine Products

I’m a big fan of Plaine Products.  When plastic is recycled, the material becomes a lesser quality.  I love that Plaine uses aluminium, which can be recycled indefinitely and that all their toiletries are cruelty-free, baby safe and hypoallergenic. They even ship using EcoEnclose, which provides compostable packaging.  I look forward to seeing what Plaine has planned for the future.

A three-pack subscription, including shampoo, conditioner, and body wash costs $80 and should last about four months.  To check out their site, click here.

Coupon codes

If you’re interested in giving Plaine a try, first-time buyers can get 25% off with “first25.”  This is for those of you who want to order a set of products to try them out before you subscribe, or if you prefer to reorder when you run low instead of subscribing.

Special thanks to Plaine Products for sponsoring this post.  As always, all opinions are my own.

  1. This is such a good idea! I’m surprised more companies haven’t thought to do this!

  2. I love the story behind the brand of raising awareness on environmental issues and of reusing bottles. Also, I find very incredible that 2 sisters are behind Plaine Products. Thank you, beauty for introducing me to this brand, I will be definitely checking into it and trying these products.

    1. Me too! Aw yes, two sisters. I can see you and Hadasah doing something amazing like this 🙂 I hope you enjoy their site. They have some interesting blog posts too xx

  3. This is a great idea of Plaine to recycle the bottles of shampoos, conditioners etc. I also like that they ship using EcoEnclose. And yes it´s unbelievable and sad how much plastic we use daily and what we do to our sees. I saw recently a documentary on this topic on German TV. Wishing you a great weekend my dear. xoxo

    1. So many good things to celebrate in this post about Plaine 🙂 I’m so happy you’re excited about it too. That documentary sounds good! There are so many interesting ones I want to watch. I hope you have a lovely weekend too xxx

  4. Plastic in the bath room was one of the topics I addressed when I got more into this sustainable lifestyle. I find hard soap best as it creates no waste at all and no packaging is needed. So for my body and face I use different kinds of hard soap. Sometimes I also use it for my hair but mainly I wash it with rye flour which works best for me (made a blog post about it around a year ago, you can check it out by just searching for rye flour :)). For my skin I use coconut oil which comes in a huge glass jar that I use as a drinking glass afterwards. Like that no trash at all and one happy Rosa 🙂
By the way, it was so fun the other day to see in your instastories that you also like to play Settlers! My husband and I are crazy about Settlers and play it whenever we can 😀
Thank you a lot for your last comment on my blog : )
    Sending much love!

    1. Those all sound like great changes. Thank you for sharing them. I’ll check out the rye flour and have yet to fully explore coconut oil. The other week I was given some shampoo bars and conditioners and so can totally see the merit in using bars of soap! I can see myself chopping and changing between Plaine and some sort of shampoo bar going forward. Aw you saw my Settlers of Catan story! It’s really good isn’t it 🙂 I love that it doesn’t take as long as Monopoly! Sending you much love xxx

    1. Isn’t it! Yes, I’ve never really paid attention to how long my things last but the longer they last the less we have to buy. A win/win for our pockets and for the environment! I hope you have a fantastic week too 🙂 xx

  5. This is a really interesting article. I try to buy refills to save on re-buying the plastic bottle I have just finished but have recently questioned what packaging this actually comes in…

    1. Thank you, I’m glad you found it interesting 🙂 Yes, now that I am starting to make these small changes I feel myself critiquing at every single thing I do.

  6. Oh, I really quite like the idea behind this subscription service! The idea that you can send your bottles back to be refilled is pretty awesome, and if we all did that then just imagine how much waste we’d save every year! It’s a great concept and one that I hope will spread to more products than just shampoos and conditioners. The products look pretty sleek and it sounds like they work really well, as well! Thanks for sharing a lovely review, hun. 🙂 xoxo

  7. I really love the look of Plaine Products and always look up to you for being so sustainable in everything you do sweet Jess, you’ve definitely inspired me tons! I’ve been looking for ways even more so lately to make changes to help save the ocean and environment so this is definitely a brand I can get behind. I think it’s the loveliest idea that the bottles are re-usable. The rosemary, mint and vanilla scents sound so gorgeous too, really unique and blissful. Am totally heart-eyed over your poolside paradise too, that water looks so dreamy! <3
